Martinis With A Southern Charm

Posted Saturday, August 28th, 2010

The ladies of Martini Mischief sampled the nightlife in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina last night. It turned out to be a very vibrant city filled with colorful people, and colorful cocktails. The place that really stood out to us was the Vintage Bar and Lounge. Because we had a lot of ground to cover, we got there early enough to speak with the bartenders and get a feel for a southern bar and lounge. As you might expect, it was very laid back and friendly with great ambiance, and garnished with southern hospitality.

Our bartenders, Savannah and Fumba, concocted some really tasty martinis from the menu, as well as two originals which were not. One was a very tasty Chocolate Covered Raspberry Martini with Bailey’s and Chocolate Liqueur. It was an excellent dessert martini and was purely decadent. This is what you drink when a slice of pie just won’t cut it. Another concoction, off the beaten path, was the Orbit. This featured Blueberry infused vodka and mint and it was amazing!!! It was definitely a surprise party for your mouth!

All in all, we really enjoyed our time in Raleigh. The city captured our hearts and the bartenders our tastebuds and we will certainly return the next time we’re in the area.

Lychee Martini Recipe

Posted Monday, August 9th, 2010

This recipe comes courtesy of Hilary, one of our Twitter buddies.  She tweeted that Lychee martinis are her favorite, and she was kind enough to send us her recipe.  (Thanks Hilary!!)   Please follow her on Twitter @SeattleHil .

Ingredients

  • 3 oz. of a premium vodka (Hilary suggests Belvedere)
  • 3 oz. of lychee juice
  • 1 oz of triple sec (optional)
  • 2 Lychees for garnish
  1. Combine ice and vodka in a cocktail shaker; add the triple sec if you like.  Shake well.
  2. Place 2 fresh lychees in the cocktail glass.
  3. Pour the martini and ice over the lychees
  4. Enjoy!

We did not try it with  the triple sec option, so I cannot recommend it to you.  But the drink otherwise is marvelous.

For those of you who are curious about this type of martini, lychee (pronounced lee-chee) is a fruit found in Southern China.  It is small, sweet and exotic.
